Examples of Gluten-Free and Organic Consumer Call to Action for Manufacturers

Moms Across America promotes eating organic, whole food, plant-prioritized, and local as much as possible. But let's face it, we all buy packaged, processed foods. When we do, we do the best we can. Our Moms are tired, however, of finding great gluten-free products that are not organic or organic products that are not gluten-free. If you can relate to this, one of our dedicated moms drafted these emails to support you to contact your favorite companies to ask them to sell products that are both Gluten-Free AND Organic. We hope you will spend a few minutes doing this. It really makes a difference! They will make what we ask them for, there just needs to be A LOT of us asking!

General Mills-

Please make an Organic version of Rice Chex and other gluten-free cereals. While Cheerios are labeled gluten-free, and we need for them to be organic to protect other babies and toddlers especially. They are not generally considered safe for people with Celiac to consume.

Do your products contain Glyphosate?
We’re glad you asked. Trace amounts of residue from pesticides, including the herbicide glyphosate, would likely be found in most food products. That is why it is important to put the amounts into context. Recent reports have suggested that trace amounts of glyphosate residue pose a safety risk in food products. This is not what regulatory agencies have determined. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration concluded that there is no link between trace pesticides in crops and risk of cancer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that glyphosate is not a carcinogenic (cancer) risk for humans, and established permitted trace levels for pesticides that are “safe for human health,” in food products. The trace amounts of glyphosate some have claimed to find in Cheerios are much lower than the amount that the EPA considers safe for human health in oats. We work closely with farmers, suppliers, and conservation organizations to minimize the use of pesticides on the crops and ingredients we use in our foods. However, I am very concerned about the health implications of him eating large amounts of cereal that is not only made with genetically engineered ingredients but also ingredients that are likely doused with glyphosate before harvest. I am writing to ask if you would consider offering an organic and gluten-free Rice Chex cereal or other varieties. Large numbers of people in the Celiac and Gluten-Free community would applaud this decision as would other health-conscious consumers. I believe sales would do very well. Annie’s-

We love that their gluten-free Rice Pasta & Classic Cheddar (macaroni & cheese) is made without artificial colors and flavors, but it’s not organic. Their classic version is made with organic pasta that contains gluten. We need a version that is gluten-free and organic!

Udi’s-

Udi's is a very popular and widely available brand that makes gluten-free bread, pizza, and other baked goods. They supply individually wrapped gluten-free bagels to sleepaway camps and other places that offer gluten-free options. As far as we know, none of their products are organic. Let’s let them know that we care what’s in our Celiac children’s food!

First off, I want to say Thank You because you provide food to the gluten-free community and for that I am grateful. I am the Mom to a child who must be gluten-free for the rest of his life due to a Celiac diagnosis. It is extremely urgent that everything he eats be safe from gluten and cross-contamination with gluten. However, gluten is not my only concern. My son has a disease that has damaged his small intestine, limited his ability to absorb nutrients, and increased his lifelong risk of cancer. These are serious issues. My son needs not only 'safe' food, he needs healthy food. His food needs to be nutritious and it needs to be safe not only from gluten but from pesticides and herbicides as well- particularly those that cause the very cancers that he is at increased risk of due to Celiac. According to Anthony Samsel and Stephanie Seneff, in their article in Interdisciplinary Toxicology, "Glyphosate, pathways to modern diseases II: Celiac Sprue and Gluten Intolerance," among many other health issues, glyphosate is implicated in non-Hodgkins lymphoma as is Celiac disease itself. Since Udi's products are not organic, it is likely that Udi's uses ingredients that have been sprayed with glyphosate- leaving a residue on the finished products. I am writing to urge you to create a line of organic gluten-free options for our kids and adults with Celiac and Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity so that we can feed our children without worrying about glyphosate or other herbicides and pesticides. Thank you so much for your consideration.

Bob’s Red Mill-

We love this brand. We think it’s great that they only use non-GMO ingredients. They make many Organic products and many Gluten Free products. During our mom's research for this campaign, we learned that they do actually make some Organic and Gluten-Free products, but many more are either Organic or Gluten-free but not both. This is what is stated on their website:

Why aren’t all your products available in organic?
"We are always looking to source new products organically, but sometimes it’s not feasible because the product is not currently grown organic, the finished product would be too expensive, or because we’re unable to source the amount needed to bring the product to market.”
We think it would be great to let them know that we really appreciate the effort that they’re making and that we would be delighted to see additional such products.

I am happy to see that you do have some products that are both organic and gluten-free and hope that you will continue to add more such products. I hope that your company will help push to ban glyphosate in the United States. That would go a long way towards making our food safer especially for the growing population of people with Celiac disease who rely on your gluten-free foods.
